Why Not Come on a Stylish Stream of Consciousness With Me?
Miu Miu on eBay, the Galliano doc, a new bijoux brand and more...
Fall can wait until the next newsletter but for now let’s just sit still and talk about some pretty things and one documentary. And make it to the beach a few more times.
Let’s Discuss the John Galliano Doc
I finally streamed High & Low: John Galliano on Amazon Prime last week. Galliano is an incredible talent and his early dedication to his craft regardless of outside endorsement or validation or you know, sales, was inspiring. Of course it all worked out once he got big jobs. But the doc is about what came after. It’s difficult to have empathy for addicts, even just the word holds so much terrible energy and doesn’t elicit sympathy so much as images of something dark and deceptive. I think as a culture we’ve allowed more light into the depths of mental illness but in very specific versions of it, namely anxiety and depression. But when mental illness gets really ugly, in your face ugly, out of bed ugly, self-sabotaging and belligerent it becomes more difficult to allow grace for people. It goes without saying that the recorded incidents that predicated Galliano’s downfall are beyond the pale, and the pain goes so deep in the communities that were affected it’s understandable that forgiveness doesn’t feel possible. And Robin Givhan’s insight on whether Galliano’s redemption would have been as swift for someone who doesn’t look like him is prescient. But I thought the interesting aspects of how the makers handled the subject was that those directly affected, namely Galliano’s boss at Dior, Sidney Toladano, and the man who was yelled at in the video (and who is still carrying what seems like PTSD from it), mostly just wanted to be acknowledged for the pain that was caused. An apology that was personal and not public. It’s a big story in that it’s about someone so famous but it’s a small story too, about healing and talent and relationships and what we all need from each other. Let me know what you think if you watch it.
Apropos of nothing…This Cos jacket is back and it keeps selling out because it’s perfect. All the Prada energy.
The Wardrobe NYC Archive Sale is a Gift
This coat is perfect, this velvet column skirt is gorgeous, I adore this knit cardigan, and the trenches are so good, and wildly discounted. I think this brand is great and that Christine Centenera is wildy chic, so invest while you can.
I Love Juju
I was stopped in my tracks when I saw Juju Vera’s jewelry on Insta and this necklace in particular. It’s shot beautifully of course, but more than anything it feels like the proper evolution of the re-embrace of the Tiffany Elsa Peretti collections. I’ve mentioned it before here but statement jewelry is having its time to literally shine again and this feels like the way to do it. Who said shell jewelry is only for summer? Let’s be mermaids all the time. Why not?
This Wall Vase Has Captured My Attention
I’ve been looking at this wall vase for maybe a couple of months on and off. It just went on sale but it was never a very big investment. I think she’s just delightful. I’m going to hang her in my book nook and make sure there’s always fresh flowers available. I am concerned cleaning it will be a not entirely straightforward but I’ll figure that out later. This isn’t about utility, it’s about magic.
A Zara Find
I went many years without shopping at Zara but every once and awhile there’s just something I want and this skirt is it right now. It’s something I know I won’t get rid of because it can be a fun summer cover up and I’m going to bring it to fashion week to wear with a chunky cashmere sweater from Soft Goat next month. Versatility!
I also just bought this vintage Miu Miu jacket below that I think it could also be cool with. It hasn’t arrived yet. I also had my eye on this one which is still available and only $150. Let me know if you get it.
But also, this Miu Miu duffel coat? I’ve landed on many Tik Toks on Japanese eBay and it’s insane the deals you can get (you have to change your location settings before searching for things like The Row Idaho). I am in love with the shrunken 90s Miu Miu jacket I bought earlier this summer, this one is similar. By all accounts, everything is authentic.
Speaking of authentic…
I am going back to the source with this book. Basically every modern manifestation and healing guru is taking most if not all of their knowledge from Jung. And that’s OK! I think so much of finding the right path is connecting with how another person delivers information in a way that speaks to you directly. But I am wanting to delve into the material from the guy who wrote it. Jung was also into astrology and was derided for it in the psychology community which just makes me love him more.
Last But Not Least, Shine Bright Like a Diamond
So I’ve been using this buzzy Dr. Diamond Instafacial collection for a couple months. It feels so different from everything else I use, almost powdery once it’s on the skin. It’s a bioactive retinoid night cream and bioidentical human growth factor serum. I’ve seen a noticeable difference in small lines and overall skin texture. I don’t do any botox or fillers and this actually feels like it moves the needle (no pun intended!). It’s an investment for sure but it feels worth it to me.
More fall shopping on the way in the next newsletter. Why not?
I think you nailed it with your comments on Galliano.
