My husband and I have had a long-running joke that all my roads will somehow lead to ultimately becoming a docent. We also love to spot docents in the wild. They are women of a certain age who give knowledgable tours at art museums, architectural sites, and other pinnacles of culture. They are notable for their style—think: minimal with a small dose of color, maybe something artsy that you might find at the MoMa store, indie designer jewelry, not a little Issey Miyake—all centered around a perfectly lovely bob (the docent knows no age, color or creed, she is every woman and every woman could become her). Last week I talked about the return of bold resin bracelets. There’s no denying hobo bags (that term probs needs to go away, let’s call them slouchy bags) are back. “Statement necklaces” are no longer bad words. Sooooo….whether you like it or not we’re ALL slowly but certainly becoming docents. It’s not a trend, it’s a life trajectory. Gallerinas grow up to be docents, fashion writers grow up to be docents, poets, architects, anyone in interior design or the art world is prime docent material. But don’t limit yourself.
As we enter this murky August moment when people are trying to make “back to school” happen, ignore the summer-deniers and lean into your inner docent instead. On the next rainy or too-hot day, hit up your local museum or deceased writer’s home, really anything that was a house that is now a museum or anywhere that could be associated with the Gilded Age. And maybe wear some of the pieces below from now well into fall and far, far beyond.
Gosh I want a Pleats Please piece so badly. Unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to try one on and I'm not sure how or if it will fit me - I'm a solid US size 12, about 5'9" tall. I've been scouring the resale sites to find just the right piece to dip my toe in.
