Why Not Take Some Last Minute NYE Styling Ideas?
If you're already in St. Barth's in a sarong, just save this for later.
I’ve never been a big New Year’s girl, for all the reasons I’m sure you already know. Once I took a boat around Manhattan to ring in—I want to say, 2006? And while it was cool to see the city from that perspective, trying in vain to get a taxi at 2AM by the South Street Seaport and having to walk miles in heels was not. Ditto when I went to see My Morning Jacket on NYE another year only to have to walk in a blizzard from MSG to Union Square. And I don’t even particularly like jam bands. Another time, I took a random press trip to Cartagena and extended it for New Year’s. My husband fell asleep before midnight so I read a book by the pool in my pjs (more on that idea to come!) and watched fireworks by myself. But since I’m not a historical fan, I’m also not usually one to shop for something glitzy just for the occasion. So in case you’re like me and you’re been voted “most likely to shop your closet in the event that you end up doing something,” below are some last minute styling ideas. Of course, you can still shop them, but you very well may not need to!
In case I forget to say so, Happy New Year! May 2025 be filled with magic and beauty. The days are already starting to get longer, let all the light in. Why not?
A Ladylike Sweater + Maxi Skirt
This is a great combo because it’s a little bit sexy when you keep the buttons undone at the bottom, but nothing wild. The headscarf adds something fun, too. My sweater is Sezane (I also love this one), and my skirt is Anine Bing that’s a personal staple. I’ve been eyeing the Reformation bella in ivory on sale. Shoes are Cos.
Mini Skirt + Cashmere Knit
I picked up the J.Crew skirt because it reminded my of this Prada look from the mid 2000s that’s never left me. But I think the sentiment of pumps, mini, and simple cashmere knit works even if your mini isn’t satin. My sweater is Naked Cashmere and it’s perfect imo and my pumps are still on sale at Co. I think I want them in black too.
The Poplin Skirt + Aran Knit
I had the thought for this look and then an email from DÔEN sharing the concept arrived in my inbox this AM, so I’m running with this synergy. This is a a nice, unexpected mix of textures. I also very much love the DÔEN knit in cream. This Staud skirt is similar to mine and perfect for all year (mine is old Adriana Degreas).
Actual PJs
Why not just wear your favorite silk PJs to a house party? It looks elegant and you’ll be wildly comfortable. Throw in some Charvet velvet slippers for good measure. These Everlane slides are also fab and on sale. For PJs you can’t go wrong with Sleeper or Morgan Lane.
Leather + Lace
I actually did a whole segment of a reel on leather anoraks before I procured this one from Smythe, so you might say I manifested it! I also love this image that matches a Prada-esque train mini skirt with a leather anorak which dresses it up in a surprising way. I do not own that Prada skirt and I don’t believe a plain mini would achieve the same thing (the proportions don’t feel right). But I also love leather with lace, which is very new Chloé coded. Are you seeing how we got here? My skirt is old Zara (I love this new J.Crew one). And my message is to dress up your leather.
Tie One On
I think we all appreciated how cool Saint Laurent’s runway with women in ties was. But I wouldn’t say everyone could see themselves in it. I’m intrigued by ties—I actually got this Kallmeyer top with a tie almost two years ago and I like it because of the black on black. But I haven’t worn it so much, maybe because I needed to ease in. My pants are great, Cos and on sale. Also to note, I think borrowing your husband/boyfriend’s black tie with a white button down and jeans or black trousers could be very chic for New Year’s. Why not?!
